Direct Teaching

Took my best friend to the House of Worship in Wilmette and bought her a prayer book. We talked about the Baha'i Faith on the whole train ride back to our hotel.

Taught my chiropractor and her assistant about the Faith, both asked if I could bring them more information.

Direct teaching is new to me but makes my heart glow. Developing the curriculum for Baha'i Children's Classes - mixing in Ruhi, Core Curriculum, cooperative games and dramatics and art related activities. Going to be a great year.

Blogging is still dead, but there's no way I can fit this much into a twitter post so there you go!

Skit Idea

Once again, idea's flying through my head but I can't quite put them in words. For record keeping sake:

Captain Seeker and the SS Daystar - A Skit

To be performed during at a special program at the Baha'i Center.

Basic Idea : Captain Seeker is a scary pirate who jumps on board the SS Daystar to steal their treasure. But the children confront the pirate and tell him/her they are seeking the wrong treasure!

They tell the pirate that with Baha'u'llah's aid, the largest treasure in the world can be found.

Props :

1) Special eye patch, to "close one eye to the world"
2) Spiritual Compass
3) Virtue Periscope - which shows the viewer people performing virtuous acts (then flash around the room to kids acting out virtues)

Have the pirate (it would be funny to have the teacher be the pirate) "sail" around the room and go back to the front to find a sandy-colored blanket draped over a "treasure chest" (cardboard box decorated)

When the pirate opens the chest, he/she pulls out large silver/gold coins (made out of paper plates and paint) with The Hidden Words written on each one.

Comments welcome.

Idea

For my own record keeping

Based on the quote "Cleanse from your hearts the love of worldly things" Baha'u'llah

Discuss with the class the importance of virtues by discussing their opposites, greed, selfishness, impatience, ect. Explain that one must cleanse their hearts of these attributes before one can acquire the heavenly virtues of God. Have them give examples of unvirtuous behavior (being careful not to lay judgement) Even have the teacher give an example of something they struggle with.

Game : Explain to the children that even if one is selfish sometimes (ect) it is possible to cleanse their hearts so that they may "absorb" God's love. Set up two buckets on opposite sides of an outdoor space. Have one bucket be filled with water and Heart Shaped Sponges. Have the children work together to empty the bucket by taking each Wet Sponge and walking to the empty bucket on the other side. Have them squeeze the sponge into the bucket and bring it back to the water filled bucket - repeating this until the first bucket is filled with dry sponges and the other one is filled with the water of Worldly Things.

With the newly empty sponges, explain that they can now soak up Love, Justice, Truth, ect.

Possibly invent additional game to demonstrate this.

Edit: Go inside and follow up with an arts-crafts activity where they make a paper heart. Have them write the virtues on the heart and decorate it with things that please them (glitter, stickers, drawings)

Discuss how this cleansed heart can now be virtuous.

Truthfulness

We had our first Summer Virtue's Class yesterday for elementary school children. It was a big success, although a summer bug prevented a few students from attending. We'll be doing 5 more classes, every Friday through July. Each class features a specific virtue or positive character trait like Truthfulness, Creativity, Generosity, ect.

This year I prepared folders for each student to keep activity worksheets in. That way if we have a few extra moments in class, they will have a coloring page or cross word puzzle to work on. And following the completion of this program, they will have a lovely reminder of how hard they worked.

'Abdu'l-Baha wrote that "Truthfulness is the foundation of all human virtues." So I like to begin the summer discussing what Virtues are, and why Truthfulness is so important.

I adapted some activities from Linden Qualls. We began with a discussion that Virtues are like flowers in a garden. I spread out silk flowers around me and pretended to be a monster. The children had to collect as many as possible without getting tagged - or they would have to give me their flowers and start over. When all the flowers were gone, each student named a virtue for each flower they had collected. It was a great way to get the children on their feet before moving into more serious discussion.

Next, we talked about situations where it is important to be truthful. After brainstorming many real life and imagined scenarios, we decided to act them out. But first we made a Truthfulness Crown! Then we took turns acting out the scenarios with or without the Truthfulness Crown on. The children found it entertaining, perhaps not realizing how much they were learning!

Because we will have twice as many students next Friday (and because the Crown was so successful) they are going to act out a few skits to the new students to help them catch up. Then we will segue into the next Virtue.

Baha'i Lesson Plan Idea

Just for my own record keeping :

Glass table / big mirror on table.
Cover with shaving cream (smear on table)
Then write virtues "into" the shaving cream which will reveal the mirror, shine flashlight on it.
Fun metaphorical and tactile activity.

Long Time Coming

I've noticed a huge shift in my internet activity - that I use it less. Despite the immeasurable new content added to the world wide web each day, I keep getting bored.

I click on facebook. Refresh refresh refresh. I think about clicking on myspace but that website is just too ridiculous to navigate. Blogging has been set aside in pursuit of the visual diary I've been keeping. I made a twitter, but I guess I didn't catch the fever because I've updated it three times.

It's not that I've been more active in the "real world", or engaged in more social activities. To be honest, I'm not sure what it is. But I'm not going to fight it.

The internet is probably my favorite invention ever, because I can open up a window and learn about anything I want. Quantum physics, the weather in Zimbabwe, the elements in a greek tragedy. And I can connect with anyone in the entire world who has access to the internet.

But more and more I'm noticing the drastic decline of communication taking place between people, and the reduction of knowledge being shared. Instead I'm seeing people summing up their lives in 140 characters on twitter, and posting short synopsis' on wikipedia. They serve as great stepping stones, but what if people don't put the next foot forward?

Not many people read this blog, or even know it exists. But if you do, and if you are curious, I have a lot to share. And I think I will someday. And I just wanted you to know.
